We took a trip down to south padre islands located very close to the Mexico border. The driving experience was a revelation with the beauty of the landscape going up a few notches with every approaching mile. The Mexican landscape with its varied hues and palm trees reminded me of the Konkan side on the Indian west coast. But this stuff was from the animations – picture perfect - blend of modern architectures in natural beauty, it didn’t have the rustic feel of Konkan, nevertheless it was inspiring to say the least.
Our stay was in Brownsville – 2o miles from the island. Thou this wasn’t the best scenario in terms of spending majority time on the island, we enjoyed the 2 mile ride over the sea every day we made our way towards the island. The ride - over the colossal bridge with its looping arches for ship transit over the blues waters, the waves playing the music and sea breeze in its full glory - made the 5 minutes an overwhelming experience. This was the stuff they make convertibles for!!!
On the island the traffic was a mess, understandably, but once we managed to park our vehicle the fun began. The ivory white sands and the blue waters are a sight to see. The water temperature is just a degree below bearable and that serves a dampener to the wetting experience. On the beach we could see people having a time of their life. Beach football, I mean soccer, is a prime sports and we enjoyed a good game. Every now and then we had a few passerby’s (m/f) joining in to kick the ball. However the most soothing experience is to lie in those sands doing nothing and you’ll never feel like going back.
One thing not worth missing in South Padre is the drive along the Padre Blvd. A 7 mile ride on it leads you to a dead end. This road culminates leaving you into a vast solitude of pleasure and blithe. There’s something about this place, may be the vibration, the frequencies or the wind over it. Surrounded with sand dunes perfect for 4x4 sports, endless stretch of land in front of your eyes and endless watery ocean on either side, the loneliness of this place makes like a beautiful after death experience. I guess I am getting a bit spiritual about it, but nothing can match that feel.
Moving on to more material stuff, the night life in padre is rocking. “Chaos” is certainly the place to be on Friday nights of your spring break, with all the “crazy” stuff happening galore. The food was disappointing, partly because of my high hopes from “Sea-food” especially after tasting the Ratnagiri sea food just a couple of months ago.
To sum it up “South Padre” is one hell of a paradise in this part of the world – everyone must experience at least one spring break in Padre!
